Your MacBook is not turning on, the screen is cracked, or the battery dies in an hour. Before you spend money fixing it, you need to know: is the repair actually worth it, or should you put that money toward a new machine?
Here is a clear framework for making that decision.
The 40% Rule
The simplest guideline: if the repair costs less than 40% of what a comparable replacement would cost, repair it. MacBooks hold their value better than almost any other laptop, so this threshold works well.
For example, if a new MacBook Air costs $1,100 and your battery replacement costs $150 (14% of replacement cost), the repair is a no-brainer. If your 2017 MacBook Pro needs a $700 logic board repair and a comparable used replacement costs $500, replacement wins.
Mac Repair Costs by Issue
| Repair | Apple Store | Independent Shop | Worth It? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battery replacement | $200–$300 | $100–$200 | Almost always yes |
| Screen replacement | $400–$800 | $200–$500 | Yes if under 5 years old |
| SSD upgrade/replacement | $300–$500 | $150–$300 | Yes (major speed boost) |
| Keyboard replacement | $300–$500 | $150–$300 | Yes for recent models |
| Logic board repair | $500–$1,200 | $400–$800 | Only if under 4 years old |
| Software/OS issues | $100–$150 | $75–$125 | Always yes |
| Virus/malware removal | $150+ | $75–$150 | Always yes |
| Charging port repair | $300–$500 | $150–$300 | Yes if under 5 years old |
When to Repair Your MacBook
Repair it if:
- It is less than 5 years old. Modern MacBooks receive macOS updates for 7+ years. A 3-year-old MacBook with a new battery has years of life left.
- The issue is the battery. Battery replacement is one of the most cost-effective repairs. A new battery makes your MacBook feel brand new for $100–$200.
- The issue is software. Slow performance, OS corruption, and malware are all fixable for under $150 with no parts needed.
- You need an SSD upgrade. Older MacBooks with HDDs or small SSDs get a massive performance boost from an SSD upgrade. This can make a 2015 MacBook feel faster than a new budget laptop.
- The screen cracked but everything else works. Screen replacement is expensive but still cheaper than a new MacBook, especially for Pro models.
When to Replace Your MacBook
Replace it if:
- It is over 7 years old and needs major hardware work. A 2017 or older MacBook needing logic board repair is not worth the investment. Put that money toward a refurbished newer model.
- It no longer receives macOS updates. Without security updates, your Mac becomes a liability. Apple typically supports models for 7–8 years.
- Multiple components are failing. If you need a new battery, screen, and keyboard, the combined cost will exceed replacement value.
- The logic board is dead on an older model. Logic board repair is the most expensive Mac repair. On machines over 5 years old, the math rarely works out.
Apple Store vs Independent Repair: What You Need to Know
Apple charges premium prices for out-of-warranty repairs. An independent repair shop can save you 40–60% on the same repair.
Apple Store advantages:
- Genuine Apple parts guaranteed
- Required for AppleCare+ claims
- Warranty on the repair itself
Independent shop advantages:
- 40–60% lower pricing on most repairs
- Same-day or next-day turnaround (vs 5–10 days at Apple)
- Mobile service available (we come to you)
- Can repair models Apple considers “vintage” or “obsolete”
- Quality aftermarket and OEM parts available
The Right to Repair movement has made independent Mac repair better than ever. Quality parts are widely available, and experienced technicians perform the same repairs Apple does at a fraction of the cost.
Making Your Decision
For Windows laptops, we have a separate guide: Is it worth repairing a laptop?
Ask yourself these three questions:
- How old is my MacBook? Under 5 years = repair. Over 7 years with major issues = replace.
- What does the repair cost vs a replacement? Under 40% of replacement cost = repair.
- Does it still get macOS updates? Yes = repair is viable. No = consider replacing.
