Your Business Email Was Hacked — Do This Now
What to Do Right Now
Change the password immediately
From a different device, change the compromised email password. Make it long (16+ characters) and unique — not used anywhere else.
Enable multi-factor authentication
Add MFA right now if it's not already on. With MFA enabled, even if the hacker tries to log in again with the old password, they can't get in.
Check for email forwarding rules
Hackers often set up forwarding rules to copy all your incoming email to their address. In Outlook: Settings → Mail → Forwarding. In Gmail: Settings → Forwarding. Delete any rules you didn't create.
Review sent messages and deleted items
Check if the hacker sent emails from your account — especially to clients, vendors, or anyone in your contacts. Wire transfer fraud and invoice scams often start with a hacked email.
Warn your contacts
If the hacker sent emails from your account, notify the recipients immediately. Tell them not to click any links or open attachments from the fraudulent messages.
Check connected apps and sessions
Revoke access for any apps or sessions you don't recognize. In Microsoft 365: account.microsoft.com → Security. In Google: myaccount.google.com → Security → Third-party apps.

Common Questions
How do hackers get into business email?
The three most common ways: phishing emails that trick you into entering your password on a fake login page, password reuse from a breached website, and brute-force attacks on accounts without multi-factor authentication. MFA stops 99% of these attacks.
Can a hacked email be used for wire fraud?
Yes — business email compromise (BEC) is the #1 cybercrime by dollar loss according to the FBI. Hackers monitor email conversations, then insert themselves with fraudulent wire transfer instructions or fake invoices. If you suspect this, contact your bank immediately.
Do we need to notify anyone about the breach?
Possibly. If client data, health records (HIPAA), financial data (GLBA), or personal information was accessible from the hacked email, you may have breach notification obligations. We help assess the exposure and determine if notification is required.
How do you fix a hacked email account?
We secure the account (password reset, MFA, remove unauthorized access), audit for damage (forwarding rules, sent messages, data exposure), check other accounts that may be compromised, and set up monitoring. Most email security incidents are resolved in one visit.
How much does email incident response cost?
Our diagnostic, from $64.99, is the on-site assessment. Single-account incidents are usually handled in the first visit. Multi-account or organization-wide compromises are quoted after assessment.
