What to Do If Your Computer Has Been Hacked

Think your computer has been hacked or compromised? Take these steps immediately to limit damage and recover.

Signs You’ve Been Hacked

  • Mouse moving on its own
  • Programs opening without you
  • Passwords no longer work
  • Unknown programs installed
  • Webcam light on unexpectedly
  • Files missing or encrypted
  • Friends received spam from your accounts
  • Unusual bank/credit card activity
  • Antivirus disabled
  • Pop-ups about hacking or ransom

Immediate Steps

Step 1: Disconnect from Internet

Do this NOW:

  1. Unplug ethernet cable
  2. Turn off WiFi
  3. Enable airplane mode
  4. This stops hacker’s connection

Step 2: Don’t Panic

  • Take a breath
  • Follow steps methodically
  • Document what you notice
  • Don’t pay ransom demands

Step 3: Don’t Use the Hacked Computer for Sensitive Tasks

Use a different device (phone, tablet, another computer) for:

From a DIFFERENT Device

Change these passwords first:

For each account:

  1. Check login history
  2. Look for unknown locations/devices
  3. Check for unauthorized changes
  4. Review recent transactions

Remove Unknown Devices

  1. Go to account security settings
  2. View connected devices
  3. Remove any you don’t recognize
  4. Sign out of all sessions

Financial Protection

Contact Your Bank

  1. Report potential compromise
  2. Check for unauthorized transactions
  3. Consider freezing accounts temporarily
  4. Request new cards if needed

Monitor Credit

  1. Check credit card statements
  2. Review bank accounts
  3. Consider credit monitoring
  4. Place fraud alert with credit bureaus

    • Windows Security > Virus & threat protection

    • Download on clean device
    • Transfer via USB
    • Run full scan

Check for Remote Access Tools

Programs Hackers Use

Look in installed programs for:

  • TeamViewer (if you didn’t install)
  • AnyDesk
  • LogMeIn
  • Remote Desktop software
  • Unknown VNC programs

Uninstall Unknown Remote Tools

  1. Settings > Apps
  2. Uninstall anything suspicious
  3. Check startup programs
  4. Disable unknown startup items

Check Windows Settings

Remote Desktop

  1. Settings > System > Remote Desktop
  2. Turn OFF if you don’t use it
  3. Remove any allowed users you don’t recognize

User Accounts

  1. Settings > Accounts > Other users
  2. Remove accounts you didn’t create
  3. Check for hidden admin accounts

Command Prompt Check

  1. Open Command Prompt as Admin
  2. Type: net user
  3. Review all listed accounts
  4. Remove unknown accounts:
    net user USERNAME /delete

  1. Go to accounts.google.com/signin/recovery
  2. Follow account recovery steps

Microsoft Account:

  1. Go to account.live.com/password/reset
  2. Use recovery options

Social Media:

Clean or Reset Computer

  4. Clean reinstall Windows
  5. Reinstall programs from scratch
