Fix Application Unable to Start Correctly Error (0xc0000142, 0xc000007b)

Getting “The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142)” or “(0xc000007b)”? These errors prevent programs from launching but are fixable.

Understanding the Error Codes

Error 0xc0000142

Usually means:

  • DLL initialization failed
  • Corrupted system files
  • Incompatible software
  • Missing dependencies

Error 0xc000007b

Usually means:

  • 32-bit/64-bit mismatch
  • Missing Visual C++ Redistributable
  • Corrupted DLL files
  • .NET Framework issues

Quick Fixes

Fix 1: Run as Administrator

  1. Right-click the program
  2. Select Run as administrator
  3. Click Yes on UAC prompt
  4. Check if it launches

Fix 2: Restart Computer

  1. Close all programs
  2. Restart computer
  3. Try launching immediately after boot

Fix 3: Compatibility Mode

  1. Right-click program > Properties
  2. Compatibility tab
  3. Check “Run this program in compatibility mode”
  4. Select Windows 10 or Windows 8
  5. Click Apply > OK

Install Visual C++ Redistributables

This fixes most 0xc000007b errors.

Install All Versions

  1. Download from Microsoft:
    • Visual C++ 2015-2022 (x64 AND x86)
    • Visual C++ 2013 (x64 AND x86)
    • Visual C++ 2012 (x64 AND x86)
    • Visual C++ 2010 (x64 AND x86)
    • Visual C++ 2008 (x64 AND x86)
  2. Install ALL of them (even on 64-bit Windows)
  3. Restart computer

Why Install x86 on 64-bit?

Many programs are 32-bit and need the 32-bit (x86) Visual C++ even on 64-bit Windows.

Install DirectX

DirectX End-User Runtime

  1. Search “DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer”
  2. Download from Microsoft
  3. Run installer
  4. Restart computer

Install .NET Framework

Enable .NET Features

  1. Settings > Apps > Optional features
  2. More Windows features
  3. Check all .NET Framework options:
    • .NET Framework 3.5
    • .NET Framework 4.8 Advanced Services
  4. Click OK
  5. Restart

Download .NET Directly

  1. Search “Download .NET”
  2. Download .NET 6, 7, and 8 from Microsoft
  3. Install each version
  4. Restart

System File Repairs

Run SFC

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  2. Run:
    sfc /scannow
  3. Wait for completion
  4. Restart computer

Run DISM

If SFC finds errors:

  1. Command Prompt as Admin
  2. Run:
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  3. Wait (may take 15-20 minutes)
  4. Run SFC again
  5. Restart

32-bit vs 64-bit Issues

Check Application Architecture

  1. Right-click program > Properties
  2. Check if 32-bit or 64-bit
  3. Or check program folder:
    • Program Files = 64-bit
    • Program Files (x86) = 32-bit

Install Correct Version

If 64-bit app on 64-bit Windows:

  • Should work - check dependencies

If 32-bit app on 64-bit Windows:

  • Install all x86 Redistributables
  • Check for 64-bit version of program

Run in Compatibility

For older 32-bit programs:

  1. Right-click > Properties
  2. Compatibility tab
  3. Check “Run in compatibility mode”
  4. Select older Windows version
  5. Check “Run as administrator”
  6. Apply

Clean Reinstall Program

Complete Uninstall

  1. Settings > Apps
  2. Find the program
  3. Uninstall
  4. Delete leftover folders:
    • Program Files[program name]
    • AppData\Local[program name]
    • AppData\Roaming[program name]
  5. Restart computer

Fresh Install

  1. Download fresh installer from official source
  2. Run as administrator
  3. Install to default location
  4. Restart before running

Registry Fixes

Fix LoadAppInit_DLLs

  1. Press Windows + R > regedit
  2. Navigate to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
  3. Find LoadAppInit_DLLs
  4. Double-click, set value to 0
  5. Restart computer

Clear Software Keys

For specific program:

  1. Backup registry first
  2. Navigate to:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\[program name]
  3. Delete the key
  4. Try launching program

Windows Update

Install All Updates

  1. Settings > Windows Update
  2. Check for updates
  3. Install everything
  4. Restart
  5. Check again for more updates

Update Graphics Drivers

Games often show this error with outdated drivers:

  1. Visit NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel website
  2. Download latest graphics driver
  3. Install and restart

Specific Program Fixes

Adobe Products

  1. Run Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool
  2. Reinstall Adobe apps
  3. Or use Adobe’s repair option

Microsoft Office

  1. Settings > Apps > Microsoft 365
  2. Modify > Online Repair
  3. Or uninstall and reinstall

Games (Steam)

  1. Right-click game > Properties
  2. Local Files > Verify integrity
  3. Or reinstall game

Games (Non-Steam)

  1. Run game installer repair option
  2. Or complete reinstall
  3. Install DirectX from game folder if included

Antivirus Interference

Temporarily Disable

  1. Disable antivirus temporarily
  2. Try launching program
  3. If works, add exception for program
  4. Re-enable antivirus

Add Exception

  1. Open antivirus settings
  2. Find exclusions or exceptions
  3. Add the program’s folder
  4. Add the .exe file

Windows Repair Install

Last Resort

If nothing else works:

  1. Download Windows 11 Media Creation Tool
  2. Create ISO or bootable USB
  3. Run setup from within Windows
  4. Choose “Keep personal files and apps”
  5. Repairs Windows without losing data
