Fix Display Driver Stopped Responding and Has Recovered

Screen goes black, then returns with “Display driver stopped responding and has recovered”? This error indicates your GPU is crashing temporarily.

What Causes This Error

  • Outdated or corrupted graphics drivers
  • GPU overheating
  • Overclocked graphics card
  • Insufficient power to GPU
  • Hardware failure beginning
  • Windows TDR (Timeout Detection and Recovery) kicking in

Quick Fixes

Fix 1: Update Graphics Driver

  1. Right-click Start > Device Manager
  2. Expand Display adapters
  3. Right-click graphics card
  4. Update driver > Search automatically

Fix 2: Restart Graphics Driver

Quick reset without restart:

  1. Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B
  2. Screen will flash black
  3. Driver restarts
  4. Continue working

Fix 3: Reduce Visual Effects

  1. Right-click Start > System
  2. Advanced system settings
  3. Performance Settings
  4. Select “Adjust for best performance”
  5. Or custom select effects

Driver Solutions

Download Latest Driver

For NVIDIA:

  1. Go to nvidia.com/drivers
  2. Select your GPU model
  3. Download and install
  4. Choose Clean Installation

For AMD:

  1. Go to amd.com/support
  2. Select your GPU
  3. Download Adrenalin software
  4. Install with Factory Reset option

For Intel:

  1. Go to intel.com/downloadcenter
  2. Select your Intel graphics
  3. Download and install

Clean Install with DDU

For persistent issues, completely remove old driver:

  1. Download DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller)
  2. Boot into Safe Mode
  3. Run DDU
  4. Select GPU manufacturer
  5. Click “Clean and restart”
  6. Install fresh driver after restart

Roll Back Driver

If error started after driver update:

  1. Device Manager > Display adapters
  2. Right-click GPU > Properties
  3. Driver tab
  4. Click Roll Back Driver
  5. Select reason and confirm

TDR Registry Fix

Increase Timeout Value

Windows resets GPU if it doesn’t respond in 2 seconds. Increase this:

  1. Press Windows + R
  2. Type regedit
  3. Navigate to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers
  4. Right-click > New > DWORD (32-bit) Value
  5. Name it TdrDelay
  6. Double-click, set value to 8 (decimal)
  7. Create another DWORD: TdrDdiDelay = 8
  8. Restart computer

Alternative TDR Values

For stubborn cases:

  • TdrLevel = 0 (disables TDR - use carefully)
  • TdrDelay = 10 or higher
  • TdrDdiDelay = 10 or higher

Overheating Fixes

Check GPU Temperature

  1. Download HWiNFO or GPU-Z
  2. Monitor GPU temperature
  3. Should be under 85°C under load
  4. Over 90°C indicates overheating

Clean Graphics Card

  1. Power off and unplug computer
  2. Open case
  3. Carefully remove dust from GPU fans
  4. Use compressed air
  5. Clean heatsink fins
  6. Reseat GPU in slot

Improve Cooling

  1. Ensure case fans working
  2. Add case fans if needed
  3. Improve cable management for airflow
  4. Consider aftermarket GPU cooler
  5. Increase fan curve in GPU software

Power Issues

Check Power Connections

  1. Ensure GPU power cables fully connected
  2. Check 6-pin and 8-pin connectors
  3. Use separate cables (not daisy-chain) for high-end GPUs
  4. Check PSU wattage is sufficient

Power Supply Issues

Insufficient power causes GPU crashes:

  • Entry GPU: 400W+ PSU
  • Mid-range GPU: 550W+ PSU
  • High-end GPU: 750W+ PSU
  • Check GPU manufacturer recommendations

Disable Overclocking

Reset to Stock Speeds

  1. Open GPU overclocking software (MSI Afterburner, etc.)
  2. Click Reset to Default
  3. Or set all sliders to 0
  4. Remove any overclock/undervolt settings

BIOS Reset

  1. Enter BIOS during startup
  2. Load Default Settings
  3. Save and exit
  4. Removes any GPU overclocking

Windows Settings

Disable Hardware Acceleration

In browsers and apps:

Chrome:

  1. Settings > System
  2. Disable “Use hardware acceleration”

Edge:

  1. Settings > System and performance
  2. Disable hardware acceleration

Discord/Other apps:

  1. Find hardware acceleration setting
  2. Disable it

Visual Effects

  1. Search “Performance”
  2. Adjust appearance and performance
  3. Visual Effects tab
  4. Adjust for best performance
  5. Or disable Aero effects

Hardware Diagnostics

Test with Different GPU

If possible:

  1. Use integrated graphics temporarily
  2. Try different graphics card
  3. Test GPU in another computer

Check for Hardware Failure

Signs of failing GPU:

  • Artifacts on screen
  • Crashes in multiple applications
  • Error persists across driver versions
  • High temperatures at idle

Reseat Graphics Card

  1. Power off completely
  2. Remove GPU from slot
  3. Clean PCIe contacts gently
  4. Reseat firmly in slot
  5. Reconnect power cables

Specific Scenarios

Error During Gaming

  1. Lower graphics settings
  2. Cap frame rate
  3. Improve cooling
  4. Check game for known GPU issues

Error During Video Playback

  1. Disable hardware acceleration in player
  2. Update graphics driver
  3. Try different video player
  4. Check video codec

Error on Integrated Graphics

  1. Update Intel/AMD graphics driver
  2. Check for BIOS update
  3. Increase shared memory in BIOS
  4. Reduce visual effects

After Windows Update

  1. Update graphics driver
  2. Check for Windows Update causing issues
  3. Roll back recent Windows update if needed
