Fix High CPU Usage in Windows 11

When your CPU is running at 100%, your computer becomes slow and unresponsive. Here’s how to diagnose and fix high CPU usage in Windows 11.

Find What’s Using CPU

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc (Task Manager)
  2. Click CPU column to sort by usage
  3. Identify the process using most CPU
  4. Note the process name for targeted fixes

Common CPU Hogs

System Interrupts

If “System Interrupts” is high (over 5-10%):

  • Usually indicates driver or hardware problem
  • Update all drivers
  • Check for faulty hardware

WMI Provider Host

WMI causes high CPU when other programs query it poorly:

  1. Open Event Viewer
  2. Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > WMI-Activity > Operational
  3. Look for errors indicating the problematic program
  4. Update or remove that program

SearchIndexer

Windows Search indexing:

Temporary fix:

  1. Services > Windows Search > Stop

Permanent fix:

  1. Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows
  2. Adjust indexed locations
  3. Exclude large folders

Windows Defender scanning:

  1. Open Windows Security
  2. Virus & threat protection > Manage settings
  3. Add exclusions for large/known-safe folders
  4. Schedule scans for idle times

Fix 4: Adjust Power Settings

Power saver can cause issues:

  1. Control Panel > Power Options

Outdated drivers cause high CPU:

  1. Visit laptop/motherboard manufacturer
  2. Download latest drivers:
    • Chipset
    • Graphics
    • Audio
    • Network
  3. Install and restart

Roll Back Problematic Driver

If high CPU started after driver update:

  1. Device Manager
  2. Right-click device > Properties
  3. Driver tab > Roll Back Driver

Windows Fixes

Run SFC and DISM

Repair corrupted files:

  1. Command Prompt as Administrator

  • Unknown processes running
  • Computer hot all the time
  • High CPU in browsers without activity

Scan Steps

  1. Windows Defender full scan
  2. Download and run Malwarebytes
  3. Consider offline scan for persistent infections

Advanced Fixes

Find conflicting software:

  1. Press Windows + R, type msconfig
  2. Services tab > Hide all Microsoft services > Disable all
  3. Startup tab > Open Task Manager > Disable all
  4. Restart
  5. If CPU normal, enable items in groups to find culprit
