Quick Fixes
Fix 1: Wait Longer
First time after update may be slow:
- Wait 5-10 minutes
- Check Task Manager for disk activity
- May be rebuilding cache
Fix 2: End Outlook Processes
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc
- Find OUTLOOK.EXE
- Click End task
- Wait 30 seconds
- Try opening again
Fix 3: Restart Computer
Often clears stuck processes:
- Restart (not sleep)
- Try opening Outlook
Safe Mode
Start in Safe Mode
- Close Outlook completely
- Hold Ctrl and click Outlook icon
- Click Yes for Safe Mode
- If opens, add-in is problem
From Run Command
- Press Windows + R
- Type:
outlook.exe /safe - Press Enter
If Safe Mode Works
- In Safe Mode: File > Options > Add-ins
- Manage: COM Add-ins > Go
- Uncheck all add-ins
- OK
- Close and open normally
- Enable add-ins one at a time
Profile Fixes
Create New Profile
- Open Control Panel
- Search “Mail”
- Click Mail (Microsoft Outlook)
- Click Show Profiles
- Click Add
- Name new profile
- Set up email account
- Check “Prompt for a profile”
- Open Outlook, select new profile
Set Profile to Prompt
- Control Panel > Mail
- Click Show Profiles
- Select “Prompt for a profile to be used”
- Try opening Outlook
- Create new profile if prompted works
File Repairs
Run Inbox Repair Tool
For PST/OST corruption:
- Close Outlook
- Navigate to:
- 64-bit:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16 - Or:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16
- 64-bit:
- Find SCANPST.EXE
- Run it
- Browse to your PST/OST file
- Click Start to scan
- Click Repair if issues found
Locate PST/OST Files
- Press Windows + R
- Type:
%localappdata%\Microsoft\Outlook - OST files are here (Exchange/365)
- PST files may be in Documents\Outlook Files
Rename OST File (Exchange/365)
Forces rebuild from server:
- Close Outlook
- Find OST file (see above)
- Rename it (add .old)
- Try opening Outlook
- Will create new OST from server
Reset Navigation Pane
Corrupted navigation pane causes loading issues:
- Close Outlook
- Press Windows + R
- Type:
outlook.exe /resetnavpane - Press Enter
- Outlook opens with reset navigation

- Uninstall Office
- Restart computer
- Reinstall Office
- Set up Outlook fresh
Hardware Acceleration
Disable Graphics Acceleration

If you can open Safe Mode:
- File > Options > Advanced
- Check “Disable hardware graphics acceleration”
- OK and restart normally

- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Graphics
- Create DWORD: DisableHardwareAcceleration = 1
