Fix Outlook Stuck on Loading Profile

Outlook stuck on “Loading Profile” screen and won’t fully open? Here’s how to fix it.

Why This Happens

  • Corrupted Outlook profile
  • Large OST/PST file issues
  • Add-in conflicts
  • Corrupted Outlook installation
  • Stuck processes

Quick Fixes

Fix 1: Wait Longer

First time after update may be slow:

  • Wait 5-10 minutes
  • Check Task Manager for disk activity
  • May be rebuilding cache

Fix 2: End Outlook Processes

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc
  2. Find OUTLOOK.EXE
  3. Click End task
  4. Wait 30 seconds
  5. Try opening again

Fix 3: Restart Computer

Often clears stuck processes:

  1. Restart (not sleep)
  2. Try opening Outlook

Safe Mode

Start in Safe Mode

  1. Close Outlook completely
  2. Hold Ctrl and click Outlook icon
  3. Click Yes for Safe Mode
  4. If opens, add-in is problem

From Run Command

  1. Press Windows + R
  2. Type: outlook.exe /safe
  3. Press Enter

If Safe Mode Works

  1. In Safe Mode: File > Options > Add-ins
  2. Manage: COM Add-ins > Go
  3. Uncheck all add-ins
  4. OK
  5. Close and open normally
  6. Enable add-ins one at a time

Profile Fixes

Create New Profile

  1. Open Control Panel
  2. Search “Mail”
  3. Click Mail (Microsoft Outlook)
  4. Click Show Profiles
  5. Click Add
  6. Name new profile
  7. Set up email account
  8. Check “Prompt for a profile”
  9. Open Outlook, select new profile

Set Profile to Prompt

  1. Control Panel > Mail
  2. Click Show Profiles
  3. Select “Prompt for a profile to be used”
  4. Try opening Outlook
  5. Create new profile if prompted works

File Repairs

Run Inbox Repair Tool

For PST/OST corruption:

  1. Close Outlook
  2. Navigate to:
    • 64-bit: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16
    • Or: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16
  3. Find SCANPST.EXE
  4. Run it
  5. Browse to your PST/OST file
  6. Click Start to scan
  7. Click Repair if issues found

Locate PST/OST Files

  1. Press Windows + R
  2. Type: %localappdata%\Microsoft\Outlook
  3. OST files are here (Exchange/365)
  4. PST files may be in Documents\Outlook Files

Rename OST File (Exchange/365)

Forces rebuild from server:

  1. Close Outlook
  2. Find OST file (see above)
  3. Rename it (add .old)
  4. Try opening Outlook
  5. Will create new OST from server

Reset Navigation Pane

Corrupted navigation pane causes loading issues:

  1. Close Outlook
  2. Press Windows + R
  3. Type: outlook.exe /resetnavpane
  4. Press Enter
  5. Outlook opens with reset navigation

Other Reset Commands

Try these commands (Windows + R):

  • outlook.exe /cleanviews - Reset folder views
  • outlook.exe /resetfolders - Reset folder names
  • outlook.exe /cleanreminders - Clear reminders

Repair Office

Quick Repair

  1. Settings > Apps > Microsoft 365
  2. Click Modify
  3. Select Quick Repair
  4. Click Repair

Online Repair

If Quick Repair doesn’t work:

  1. Same location
  2. Select Online Repair
  3. Takes longer, requires internet
  4. More thorough

Reinstall Outlook

Last resort:

  1. Uninstall Office
  2. Restart computer
  3. Reinstall Office
  4. Set up Outlook fresh

Hardware Acceleration

Disable Graphics Acceleration

  1. If you can open Safe Mode:

    • File > Options > Advanced
    • Check “Disable hardware graphics acceleration”
    • OK and restart normally
  2. Or via Registry:

    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Graphics
    • Create DWORD: DisableHardwareAcceleration = 1
