Quick Fixes
Fix 1: Toggle Work Offline
- Go to Send/Receive tab
- Click Work Offline
- Wait 5 seconds
- Click Work Offline again
- Check connection status
Fix 2: Force Reconnect
- Click Send/Receive tab
- Click Send/Receive All Folders
- Or press F9
Fix 3: Restart Outlook
- File > Exit (don’t just close)
- Open Task Manager
- End any OUTLOOK.EXE processes
- Wait 30 seconds
- Reopen Outlook
Clear Authentication Cache
This is the most common fix:
Method 1: Windows Credentials
- Close Outlook
- Control Panel > Credential Manager
- Click Windows Credentials
- Find entries containing “Microsoft” or “Outlook”
- Click each > Remove
- Reopen Outlook (will prompt for login)
Method 2: Clear OneAuth Folder
- Close Outlook and all Office apps
- Press Windows + R
- Type
%localappdata%\Microsoft - Rename or delete:
- OneAuth folder
- IdentityCache folder
- Reopen Outlook
Profile Fixes
Repair Profile
- File > Account Settings > Account Settings
- Select your account
- Click Repair
- Follow prompts
Create New Profile
If repair fails:
- Close Outlook
- Search “Mail” in Windows
- Open Mail (Outlook) settings
- Click Show Profiles
- Click Add
- Create new profile, add account
- Set as default
- Delete old profile if new one works
Safe Mode Troubleshooting
Start Outlook in Safe Mode
- Close Outlook
- Hold Ctrl and click Outlook icon
- Click Yes for Safe Mode
- If it connects, add-ins are the problem
Disable Add-ins
- File > Options > Add-ins
- Manage: COM Add-ins > Go
- Uncheck all
- OK and restart normally
- Enable add-ins one by one
Network Fixes
Check Internet
- Open browser, visit any website
- Try webmail (outlook.com or your provider)
- If no internet, fix connection first
Disable VPN/Proxy
- Disconnect any VPN
- Settings > Network > Proxy
- Ensure “Use proxy server” is Off
- Try Outlook
Check Firewall
- Temporarily disable Windows Firewall
- Try Outlook
- If works, add Outlook exception
- Re-enable firewall
Server Status
Check Microsoft 365 Status
- Visit status.office.com
- Look for Outlook/Exchange issues
- If outage, wait for Microsoft
Try Webmail
- Go to outlook.office365.com
- Sign in with your account
- If webmail works, issue is local
- If webmail fails, server issue
Update Fixes
Update Office
- Open any Office app
- File > Account
- Update Options > Update Now
- Restart after updating
Repair Office
- Settings > Apps > Microsoft 365
- Click Modify
- Try Quick Repair first
- If not fixed, try Online Repair
Advanced Fixes
Delete OST File (Exchange/365)
Warning: Deletes local email cache - will re-download from server.
- Close Outlook
- Press Windows + R
- Type
%localappdata%\Microsoft\Outlook - Find .ost file matching your account
- Rename or delete it
- Reopen Outlook - will recreate
Registry Fix
- Close Outlook
- Open Registry Editor (regedit)
- Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\AutoDiscover - Create DWORD: ExcludeScpLookup = 1
- Restart Outlook
Reset Internet Options
- Search “Internet Options”
- Advanced tab
- Click Reset (or Restore advanced settings)
- OK and restart Outlook
