Fix PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA Blue Screen Error

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA is a memory-related blue screen error. It typically indicates a problem with your RAM, drivers, or system files.

What Does This Error Mean?

This error (Stop Code 0x00000050) occurs when Windows tries to access memory that should always be available but isn’t. Think of it as Windows reaching for something that should be there but isn’t.

Common Causes

  • Faulty RAM - Most common cause
  • Incompatible RAM - Mismatched memory modules
  • Corrupted drivers - Especially recently installed ones
  • Failing hard drive - Causing paging file errors
  • Software conflicts - Antivirus or system utilities
  • Windows file corruption - Damaged system files

Quick Diagnosis

The blue screen may show a file name after the error:

  • ntfs.sys - Storage/file system issue
  • win32k.sys - Graphics driver problem
  • ntoskrnl.exe - Core Windows issue
  • Driver file name - Specific driver is faulty

Immediate Fixes

Fix 1: Restart and Observe

Sometimes the error is temporary:

  1. Restart your computer normally
  2. If it boots, use the computer and see if it recurs
  3. One-time errors may not need fixing

Fix 2: Boot into Safe Mode

If crashes are frequent:

  1. Hold Shift while clicking Restart
  2. Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart
  3. Press 4 for Safe Mode
  4. If Safe Mode is stable, a driver or software is the cause

Fix 3: Run Windows Memory Diagnostic

Test your RAM for errors:

  1. Press Windows + R, type mdsched, Enter
  2. Click Restart now and check for problems
  3. Let the test complete (takes 10-30 minutes)
  4. Check results after restart

If errors are found: You likely have faulty RAM that needs replacement.

Fix 4: Run SFC and DISM

Repair corrupted system files:

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  2. Run:
    sfc /scannow
  3. Then run:
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  4. Restart and test

Update Drivers

If the error names a specific driver:

  1. Open Device Manager
  2. Find the device related to the named file
  3. Right-click, select Update driver
  4. Install from manufacturer website for best results

Roll Back Drivers

If the error started after a driver update:

  1. Open Device Manager
  2. Right-click the device
  3. Properties > Driver tab > Roll Back Driver
  4. Restart

Uninstall Problematic Drivers

Completely remove and reinstall:

  1. In Device Manager, right-click the device
  2. Select Uninstall device
  3. Check Delete the driver software
  4. Restart - Windows will install a basic driver
  5. Install the latest driver from manufacturer

Reseat Your RAM

Loose RAM connections cause errors:

For Desktop:

  1. Shut down and unplug
  2. Open the case
  3. Release RAM clips and remove modules
  4. Clean contacts with eraser (gently)
  5. Reinsert firmly until clips snap
  6. Test

For Laptop:

  • Usually requires removing bottom panel
  • If uncomfortable, seek professional help

Test Individual RAM Sticks

If you have multiple sticks:

  1. Remove all but one RAM stick
  2. Run Memory Diagnostic
  3. If no errors, add another stick
  4. Repeat until you find the faulty one

Check RAM Compatibility

Mismatched RAM causes issues:

  • All sticks should be same speed (MHz)
  • All sticks should be same type (DDR4, DDR5, etc.)
  • Check motherboard QVL (Qualified Vendor List)

Run CHKDSK

Check for hard drive errors:

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  2. Run:
    chkdsk C: /f /r
  3. Type Y to schedule
  4. Restart and let it complete

Check Drive Health

Use CrystalDiskInfo:

  1. Download and install
  2. Check Health Status
  3. If “Caution” or “Bad,” back up data immediately

Uninstall Recent Software

Recent programs may conflict:

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps
  2. Sort by Date installed
  3. Uninstall recently added programs
  4. Restart and test

Disable Fast Startup

Fast Startup can cause memory issues:

  1. Open Control Panel > Power Options
  2. Click Choose what the power buttons do
  3. Click Change settings that are currently unavailable
  4. Uncheck Turn on fast startup
  5. Save and restart

Reset Virtual Memory

Corrupted paging file causes this error:

  1. Search for Advanced system settings
  2. Under Performance, click Settings
  3. Go to Advanced > Virtual memory > Change
  4. Uncheck automatic management
  5. Set to No paging file, click Set
  6. Restart
  7. Return and re-enable automatic paging

  3. Startup tab > Open Task Manager > Disable all
  4. Restart

If stable, enable items in groups to find the culprit.

Update BIOS

Outdated BIOS can cause memory issues:

  1. Note your current BIOS version (check System Information)
  2. Visit motherboard/laptop manufacturer’s website
  3. Download latest BIOS
  4. Follow manufacturer’s instructions carefully

Warning: BIOS updates carry risk. Don’t interrupt the process.

System Restore

Go back to when it worked:

  1. Search for Create a restore point
