If Windows 11 takes minutes to start, you don’t have to live with it. Here’s how to dramatically speed up boot time.
Normal vs. Slow Startup
Normal boot times:
- SSD: 10-30 seconds
- HDD: 30-60 seconds
Slow boot times:
- SSD: Over 1 minute
- HDD: Over 2-3 minutes
Quick Wins
Fix 1: Enable Fast Startup
- Control Panel > Power Options
- Choose what power buttons do
- Change settings currently unavailable
- Check “Turn on fast startup”
- Save changes
Note: If causing issues, disable it instead.
Fix 2: Disable Startup Programs
Most impactful fix:
- Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc)
- Startup apps tab
- Sort by Startup impact
- Disable high-impact apps you don’t need
- Keep only essentials (antivirus, etc.)
Fix 3: Set Windows to High Performance
- Control Panel > Power Options
- Select “High performance”
- Or create custom plan optimized for speed
Startup Program Management
Check All Startup Locations
Task Manager:
- Ctrl + Shift + Esc > Startup apps
Services:
- services.msc > check Automatic services
Scheduled Tasks:
- Task Scheduler > check “At startup” tasks
Programs to Disable
Usually safe to disable at startup:
- Adobe Creative Cloud
- Spotify
- Discord
- Steam
- Microsoft Teams (if not needed immediately)
- Printer software
- Game launchers
Programs to Keep
Keep these enabled:
- Antivirus
- Graphics driver utilities (if needed)
- Essential work software
Driver Optimizations
Update Graphics Driver
Outdated drivers slow startup:
- Visit nvidia.com, amd.com, or intel.com
- Download latest driver
- Install and restart
Update Storage Driver
- Device Manager > IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
- Update driver
- Or download from manufacturer
Disk Optimizations
Check Disk Health
Failing drives cause slow startup:
- Download CrystalDiskInfo
- Check Health Status
- If issues found, backup and replace
Enable AHCI Mode (If Not Enabled)
AHCI is faster than IDE mode:
- Check Device Manager > IDE controllers
- If shows “IDE” instead of “AHCI”
- Enable in BIOS (requires Windows reinstall usually)
Defragment HDD (Not SSD)
For traditional hard drives:
- Search “Defragment and Optimize Drives”
- Select drive
- Click Optimize
Note: Don’t defragment SSDs.
System Optimizations
Run Disk Cleanup
- Search “Disk Cleanup”
- Select system drive
- Check all boxes
- Click “Clean up system files”
- Check additional boxes
- OK to delete
Reduce Visual Effects
- Search “Advanced system settings”
- Performance > Settings
- Select “Adjust for best performance”
- Or customize to keep specific effects
Disable Transparency
- Settings > Personalization > Colors
- Turn off “Transparency effects”
BIOS Optimizations
Enable Fast Boot
- Enter BIOS (Del, F2, or F10 at startup)
- Find “Fast Boot” or “Quick Boot”
- Enable it
- Save and exit
Disable Unused Devices
In BIOS:
- Disable unused SATA ports
- Disable unused USB controllers
- Disable serial/parallel ports
The Ultimate Fix: SSD Upgrade
If you have a traditional hard drive:
SSD benefits:
- Boot time: Under 20 seconds
- Everything opens faster
- Dramatic improvement
Cost: $50-100 for 500GB SSD
This single upgrade makes the biggest difference.
Advanced Fixes
Run Startup Repair
- Settings > System > Recovery
- Advanced startup > Restart now
- Troubleshoot > Advanced options
- Startup Repair
Clean Boot Windows
Find startup culprits:
- msconfig > Services > Hide Microsoft services > Disable all
- Startup tab > Task Manager > Disable all
- Restart and measure boot time
- Enable items in groups to find slow ones
Reset Windows
If nothing else works:
- Settings > System > Recovery
- Reset this PC > Keep my files
- Fresh Windows, fast startup
Measure Startup Time
Check Boot Time
- Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System
- Filter by Event ID 1 (Source: Power-Troubleshooter)
- See “Boot Duration” in seconds
Compare Before and After
Measure after each change to see what helps.
