Fix SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION Blue Screen Error

SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION is a common blue screen error that usually points to driver or system file problems. Here’s how to diagnose and fix it.

What Causes SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION?

This error (Stop Code 0x0000003B) occurs when a system process or driver encounters an exception it can’t handle. The blue screen often shows the name of the responsible file.

Common Culprit Files

  • win32k.sys - Graphics/display driver issue
  • ntfs.sys - File system or hard drive problem
  • ntoskrnl.exe - Core Windows kernel issue
  • nvlddmkm.sys - NVIDIA graphics driver
  • atikmdag.sys - AMD graphics driver
  • ks.sys - Windows kernel streaming (audio/video)
  • dxgkrnl.sys - DirectX graphics kernel

Common Causes

  • Incompatible or outdated drivers
  • Corrupted system files
  • Software conflicts
  • Malware infection
  • Hardware problems (RAM, GPU)
  • Windows Update issues

Identifying the Problem Driver

The blue screen may display the file causing the crash. Write it down - it tells you what to fix.

If you miss it, find crash information:

  1. Open Event Viewer
  2. Go to Windows Logs > System
  3. Look for Critical or Error events around crash time
  4. Click the event for details

Quick Fixes

Fix 1: Update Graphics Drivers

Graphics drivers are the most common cause:

For NVIDIA:

  1. Go to nvidia.com/drivers
  2. Download latest driver for your GPU
  3. Run installer, choose Custom > Clean installation
  4. Restart

For AMD:

  1. Go to amd.com/support
  2. Download latest driver
  3. Install and restart

For Intel:

  1. Go to intel.com/download-center
  2. Use Intel Driver & Support Assistant
  3. Install recommended updates

Fix 2: Run SFC and DISM

Repair corrupted system files:

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  2. Run:
    sfc /scannow
  3. After completion, run:
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  4. Run sfc /scannow again
  5. Restart

Fix 3: Update Windows

Microsoft regularly releases fixes:

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update
  2. Click Check for updates
  3. Install all available updates
  4. Restart and check for more

Fix 4: Boot into Safe Mode

If crashes are frequent:

  1. Hold Shift while clicking Restart
  2. Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings
  3. Click Restart, then press 4 for Safe Mode
  4. If stable in Safe Mode, a third-party driver/software is the cause

Advanced Solutions

Uninstall Recent Drivers

If the error started after a driver update:

  1. Open Device Manager
  2. Right-click the recently updated device
  3. Select Properties > Driver tab
  4. Click Roll Back Driver
  5. Restart

Uninstall Problematic Software

Certain software commonly causes this error:

  • Antivirus programs (especially third-party)
  • Virtual machine software (VMware, VirtualBox)
  • Overclocking utilities (MSI Afterburner, etc.)
  • System utilities (driver updaters, registry cleaners)

Try uninstalling recently installed software or known problematic programs.

Check for Malware

Malware can corrupt system files:

  1. Boot into Safe Mode with Networking
  2. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection
  3. Run Full scan
  4. Or use Microsoft Defender Offline scan

Test Your RAM

Memory errors trigger this exception:

  1. Press Windows + R, type mdsched, Enter
  2. Select Restart now and check for problems
  3. Wait for test completion
  4. If errors found, test individual RAM sticks

Check Hard Drive Health

Storage issues can cause system exceptions:

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  2. Run:
    chkdsk C: /f /r
  3. Type Y and restart
  4. Let CHKDSK complete

Disable Hardware Acceleration

If crashes happen during graphics-intensive tasks:

In Windows:

  1. Open Settings > System > Display
  2. Click Graphics
  3. Add problematic apps and set to “Power saving”

In Chrome:

  1. Settings > System
  2. Disable “Use hardware acceleration when available”

In Discord, Slack, etc.:

  • Find hardware acceleration in settings and disable

Perform Clean Boot

Identify if third-party software is responsible:

  1. Press Windows + R, type msconfig
  2. Go to Services tab
  3. Check Hide all Microsoft services
  4. Click Disable all
  5. Go to Startup tab, click Open Task Manager
  6. Disable all startup items
  7. Restart

If stable, gradually re-enable services to find the culprit.
