Fix Your Windows License Will Expire Soon Error

Getting “Your Windows license will expire soon” notifications? Here’s how to fix Windows activation problems.

Why This Happens

  • Volume license expired
  • Hardware changes triggered reactivation
  • Windows Update reset activation
  • Trial or evaluation period ending
  • License transferred to another PC
  • Product key issue

Check Activation Status

View Current Status

  1. Settings > System > Activation
  2. Check status message:
    • “Windows is activated” = Good
    • “Windows is activated with a digital license” = Good
    • “Windows is not activated” = Needs attention
    • “Windows license will expire” = Time limited

Check Edition and License Type

  1. Settings > System > About
  2. Note Windows edition (Home, Pro, etc.)
  3. Check if correct edition for your license

Activation Troubleshooter

Run Troubleshooter

  1. Settings > System > Activation
  2. Click Troubleshoot
  3. Wait for diagnosis
  4. Follow suggested fixes
  5. Restart if prompted

After Hardware Changes

If you changed hardware:

  1. Run troubleshooter
  2. Select “I changed hardware recently”
  3. Sign in with Microsoft account
  4. Select your PC from list
  5. Activate

Re-enter Product Key

Enter Existing Key

  1. Settings > System > Activation
  2. Click Change product key
  3. Enter your 25-character product key
  4. Click Next
  5. Activate

Find Your Product Key

On a sticker:

  • Check bottom of laptop
  • Check desktop case
  • Look at original packaging

In email:

  • Check purchase confirmation email
  • Search email for “product key” or “Windows”

From manufacturer:

  • Contact PC manufacturer
  • They may have record of your license

Command Line Key Entry

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  2. Type:
    slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
  3. Replace X’s with your key
  4. Press Enter
  5. Type:
    slmgr /ato
  6. Press Enter to activate

Digital License

For digital license without product key:

  1. Ensure signed in with Microsoft account
  2. Settings > System > Activation
  3. Should show “Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account”

If Not Linked

  1. Settings > Accounts
  2. Sign in with Microsoft account
  3. Return to Activation
  4. Link license to account

Volume License Issues

For Business/Enterprise

If your organization manages licenses:

  1. Contact IT department
  2. They may need to:
    • Renew volume license
    • Reactivate through KMS server
    • Provide new product key

KMS Activation

For volume license clients:

  1. Command Prompt as Admin
  2. Type:
    slmgr /skms your-kms-server.domain.com
  3. Then:
    slmgr /ato

Clear Activation Cache

Reset Licensing Status

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  2. Stop service:
    net stop sppsvc
  3. Navigate to folder:
    cd %windir%\System32\spp\store\2.0
  4. Rename files:
    ren tokens.dat tokens.old
  5. Restart:
    net start sppsvc
  6. Restart computer
  7. Reenter product key

Windows Update Issues

If Activation Lost After Update

  1. Run activation troubleshooter
  2. If doesn’t work, try:
    • Rolling back the update
    • Re-entering product key
  3. Check Microsoft known issues

Install All Updates

Sometimes updates fix activation:

  1. Settings > Windows Update
  2. Check for updates
  3. Install all available
  4. Restart and check activation

Buy Legitimate License

If You Need New License

  1. Settings > System > Activation
  2. Click Go to Store
  3. Purchase Windows license
  4. Or visit Microsoft Store website

License Types

  • Windows 11 Home: Basic features
  • Windows 11 Pro: Business features
  • Upgrade from Home to Pro: Purchase upgrade

After Hardware Change

Major Hardware Changes

Changing motherboard may deactivate Windows:

  1. Before change: Link license to Microsoft account
  2. After change: Run troubleshooter
  3. Select “I changed hardware”
  4. Activate with linked account

Supported Changes

Minor changes usually don’t trigger reactivation:

  • RAM upgrade
  • Hard drive replacement
  • Graphics card change

Major changes may require reactivation:

  • Motherboard replacement
  • CPU change (sometimes)

Phone Activation

If Online Fails

  1. Command Prompt as Administrator
  2. Type:
    slui 4
  3. Select your country
  4. Call the provided number
  5. Follow automated prompts
  6. Enter confirmation ID

Check for Malware

Fake Activation Messages

Some malware displays fake activation warnings:

  1. Run full antivirus scan
  2. Use Windows Security scan
  3. Try Malwarebytes free scan
  4. Remove any threats found

System File Issues

Repair System Files

Corrupted files can affect activation:

  1. Command Prompt as Admin
  2. Run:
    sfc /scannow
  3. Then:
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  4. Restart
  5. Check activation status

Contact Microsoft Support

When to Contact

  • Troubleshooter doesn’t resolve
  • Product key doesn’t work
  • Need to transfer license
  • Purchased but can’t activate

  2. May offer “Contact Microsoft Support” option
  3. Or call Microsoft Support directly
  4. Have proof of purchase ready
