Why This Happens
- Volume license expired
- Hardware changes triggered reactivation
- Windows Update reset activation
- Trial or evaluation period ending
- License transferred to another PC
- Product key issue
Check Activation Status
View Current Status
- Settings > System > Activation
- Check status message:
- “Windows is activated” = Good
- “Windows is activated with a digital license” = Good
- “Windows is not activated” = Needs attention
- “Windows license will expire” = Time limited
Check Edition and License Type
- Settings > System > About
- Note Windows edition (Home, Pro, etc.)
- Check if correct edition for your license
Activation Troubleshooter
Run Troubleshooter
- Settings > System > Activation
- Click Troubleshoot
- Wait for diagnosis
- Follow suggested fixes
- Restart if prompted
After Hardware Changes
If you changed hardware:
- Run troubleshooter
- Select “I changed hardware recently”
- Sign in with Microsoft account
- Select your PC from list
- Activate
Re-enter Product Key
Enter Existing Key
- Settings > System > Activation
- Click Change product key
- Enter your 25-character product key
- Click Next
- Activate
Find Your Product Key
On a sticker:
- Check bottom of laptop
- Check desktop case
- Look at original packaging
In email:
- Check purchase confirmation email
- Search email for “product key” or “Windows”
From manufacturer:
- Contact PC manufacturer
- They may have record of your license
Command Line Key Entry
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator
- Type:
slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX - Replace X’s with your key
- Press Enter
- Type:
slmgr /ato - Press Enter to activate
Digital License
Link to Microsoft Account
For digital license without product key:
- Ensure signed in with Microsoft account
- Settings > System > Activation
- Should show “Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account”
If Not Linked
- Settings > Accounts
- Sign in with Microsoft account
- Return to Activation
- Link license to account
Volume License Issues
For Business/Enterprise
If your organization manages licenses:
- Contact IT department
- They may need to:
- Renew volume license
- Reactivate through KMS server
- Provide new product key
KMS Activation
For volume license clients:
- Command Prompt as Admin
- Type:
slmgr /skms your-kms-server.domain.com - Then:
slmgr /ato
Clear Activation Cache
Reset Licensing Status
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator
- Stop service:
net stop sppsvc - Navigate to folder:
cd %windir%\System32\spp\store\2.0 - Rename files:
ren tokens.dat tokens.old - Restart:
net start sppsvc - Restart computer
- Reenter product key
Windows Update Issues
If Activation Lost After Update
- Run activation troubleshooter
- If doesn’t work, try:
- Rolling back the update
- Re-entering product key
- Check Microsoft known issues
Install All Updates
Sometimes updates fix activation:
- Settings > Windows Update
- Check for updates
- Install all available
- Restart and check activation
Buy Legitimate License
If You Need New License
- Settings > System > Activation
- Click Go to Store
- Purchase Windows license
- Or visit Microsoft Store website

- Windows 11 Pro: Business features
- Upgrade from Home to Pro: Purchase upgrade

Changing motherboard may deactivate Windows:

- Remove any threats found

- Run:
sfc /scannow - Then:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - Restart
- Check activation status
