Fix Windows Update Error 0x80244022: Server Connection Failed

Error 0x80244022 means Windows Update can’t connect to Microsoft’s update servers. This connection error is usually fixable with the right approach.

What Causes Error 0x80244022?

This error typically occurs due to:

  • Network connectivity issues - Internet connection problems
  • Firewall blocking - Security software blocking Windows Update
  • Proxy settings - Incorrect proxy configuration
  • DNS problems - Can’t resolve Microsoft’s servers
  • Server-side issues - Microsoft’s servers are temporarily unavailable
  • Corrupted update cache - Damaged local update files

Quick Fixes

Fix 1: Check Your Internet Connection

Start with the basics:

  1. Open your web browser
  2. Try visiting any website
  3. If you can’t browse, fix your internet first
  4. Try restarting your router/modem

Fix 2: Restart Windows Update Service

Sometimes the service just needs a restart:

  1. Press Windows + R, type services.msc
  2. Find Windows Update in the list
  3. Right-click, select Restart
  4. Also restart Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
  5. Try the update again

Fix 3: Run Windows Update Troubleshooter

  1. Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot
  2. Click Other troubleshooters
  3. Run Windows Update
  4. Apply any fixes it suggests

Fix 4: Flush DNS Cache

Clear DNS cache to resolve connection issues:

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  2. Run these commands:
    ipconfig /flushdns
    ipconfig /registerdns
    netsh winsock reset
  3. Restart your computer

Advanced Solutions

Reset Windows Update Components

Clear all update data and start fresh:

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  2. Run these commands:
net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old

net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver
  1. Restart your computer
  2. Try the update again

Check Proxy Settings

Incorrect proxy settings block updates:

Check Internet Explorer/Edge proxy:

  1. Open Internet Options (search in Start menu)
  2. Go to Connections tab
  3. Click LAN settings
  4. Ensure settings are correct (most home users should have no proxy)

Reset proxy via command line:

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  2. Run:
    netsh winhttp reset proxy

Configure Firewall for Windows Update

Make sure Windows Update isn’t blocked:

Windows Defender Firewall:

  1. Open Windows Security
  2. Click Firewall & network protection
  3. Click Allow an app through firewall
  4. Ensure Windows Update is allowed

Third-party firewalls: Add exceptions for:

  • svchost.exe
  • wuauclt.exe
  • Microsoft update servers (*.microsoft.com, *.windowsupdate.com)

Change DNS Servers

If DNS is the issue, try public DNS:

  1. Open Settings > Network & internet
  2. Click on your connection (WiFi or Ethernet)
  3. Click Edit next to DNS server assignment
  4. Select Manual
  5. Enable IPv4 and enter:
    • Preferred DNS: 8.8.8.8
    • Alternate DNS: 8.8.4.4
  6. Save and restart

Use Google DNS or Cloudflare DNS

Alternative DNS options:

Google DNS:

  • Primary: 8.8.8.8
  • Secondary: 8.8.4.4

Cloudflare DNS:

  • Primary: 1.1.1.1
  • Secondary: 1.0.0.1

Download Updates Manually

If automatic download fails:

  1. Note the KB number of the failing update (from Windows Update)
  2. Go to Microsoft Update Catalog
  3. Search for the KB number
  4. Download the appropriate version (x64 or x86)
  5. Run the downloaded file to install

VPN and Corporate Network Issues

If You’re on a VPN

  1. Disconnect from VPN
  2. Try Windows Update
  3. If successful, your VPN may be blocking updates
  4. Configure VPN to allow Microsoft update traffic

Temporary Server Issues

Sometimes Microsoft’s servers are the problem:

How to check:

  1. Visit Microsoft Service Status
  2. Check for Windows Update outages
  3. If there’s an outage, wait and try later

Wait it out:

  • Try again in a few hours
  • Microsoft server issues usually resolve quickly
  • Peak times (Patch Tuesday) may have delays
