These steps are safe for anyone and fix the easy cases. The last step tells you when to stop.

1. 1 Disconnect from the internet (unplug ethernet or turn off WiFi) so the infection can't spread or send data out.
2. 2 Do not enter passwords, do not log into banking, and never call a phone number shown in a pop-up — those numbers are the scam.
3. 3 Run a full scan with Windows Security (Start, type Windows Security, Virus & threat protection, Scan options, Full scan).
4. 4 Check your browser extensions and remove anything you don't recognize — fake extensions are the #1 source of pop-up storms.
5. 5 After cleanup, change important passwords from a different, clean device — not the infected one.
