Getting a wireless printer connected to WiFi can be frustrating. Here’s how to fix common wireless printer connection issues.
Why Wireless Printers Won’t Connect
- Wrong WiFi password - Most common cause
- Printer too far from router - Weak signal
- Router settings - 5GHz only, MAC filtering, etc.
- Printer WiFi disabled - Needs to be turned on
- Network type mismatch - Different security protocols
- IP address conflict - Multiple devices with same IP
Before You Start
Gather Information
You’ll need:
- WiFi network name (SSID)
- WiFi password (exactly as set on router)
- Router location and access to it
- Printer’s network menu
Check Router Settings
Log into your router and verify:
- 2.4GHz network is enabled (most printers prefer this)
- SSID broadcast is enabled
- MAC filtering is disabled or printer added
- WPA2 security (most compatible)
Connection Methods
Method 1: WiFi Setup Wizard (Printer Panel)
Most printers have built-in setup:
- On printer, go to Settings or Setup
- Find Network or Wireless
- Select WiFi Setup Wizard or similar
- Select your network from list
- Enter WiFi password carefully
- Wait for connection confirmation
Method 2: WPS (WiFi Protected Setup)
If your router has a WPS button:
- On printer, find WPS in network settings
- Select Push Button or WPS PBC
- Within 2 minutes, press WPS button on router
- Hold until light blinks
- Printer should connect automatically
Note: Not all routers have WPS, and some have it disabled for security.
Method 3: Printer Software Setup
Using computer:
- Download printer software from manufacturer
- Run installer
- Choose Wireless setup
- Follow on-screen instructions
- Software guides you through WiFi setup
Method 4: WiFi Direct / Temporary Connection
Connect computer directly to printer:
- Enable WiFi Direct on printer
- On computer, connect to printer’s direct network
- Run printer setup software
- Configure printer to connect to your router
- Reconnect computer to your normal WiFi
Common Issues and Fixes
Printer Can’t Find Network
Possible causes:
- 5GHz network only (printers usually need 2.4GHz)
- SSID hidden
- Printer too far from router
Fixes:
- Enable 2.4GHz network on router
- Unhide SSID (or enter manually on printer)
- Move printer closer to router
- Check for interference (microwaves, etc.)
Password Not Accepted
Troubleshooting:
- Verify exact password on router
- Check for caps/special characters
- Try typing password more slowly
- Some printers have character limits
- Reset WiFi password to something simpler temporarily
Printer Connects Then Disconnects
Fixes:
- Check for IP address conflict
- Set static IP for printer
- Update printer firmware
- Reduce distance from router
- Check for channel interference
Connected But Not Printing
Printer connected to WiFi but won’t print:
- Ensure computer is on same network
- Add printer in Windows:
- Settings > Printers > Add device
- Check printer IP hasn’t changed
- Install printer software if not done
Advanced WiFi Fixes
Set Static IP Address
Prevents IP changes:
On Printer:
- Network Settings > TCP/IP
- Set to Manual/Static
- Enter:
- IP: 192.168.1.X (X = number not in DHCP range)
- Subnet: 255.255.255.0
- Gateway: Your router IP
On Router:
- Find DHCP settings
- Add reservation for printer MAC address
- Assign specific IP
Fix Router Compatibility
Some settings cause issues:
Try changing:
- Channel (try 1, 6, or 11 for 2.4GHz)
- Security to WPA2-Personal only
- Band from “Auto” to specific bands
- Disable band steering
- Enable 802.11b/g/n mode
Check MAC Filtering
If your router filters MAC addresses:
- Find printer’s MAC address (print network page)
- Log into router
- Add MAC address to allowed list
- Or disable MAC filtering
Brand-Specific Tips

- Hold WiFi button until light flashes
- Use Canon PRINT app
- Or setup through printer menu

- Use Epson Smart Panel app
- Or Setup > Network > WiFi Setup Wizard
- Epson Connect for remote printing
