We recently serviced a Konica Minolta bizhub 227 MFP at a business in Dallas. The scanner and automatic document feeder had stopped functioning properly — scans were coming out with lines, and the ADF was jamming intermittently.
The Problem: ADF and Scanner Mechanism Failure
The bizhub 227 is a workhorse office MFP that handles printing, copying, scanning, and faxing. This unit had been in daily use for years, and the scanner mechanism was showing its age. The automatic document feeder was misfeeding documents, and flatbed scans had visible banding — both signs of worn mechanical components inside the scanner assembly.
What We Found Inside
After opening the scanner unit and removing the ADF cover, we could see the issue clearly:
Worn timing belt — The rubber timing belt that drives the scanner carriage back and forth across the glass had stretched and was slipping on the pulleys. This causes the scanner to lose position mid-scan, resulting in distorted or banded images.
Dirty feed rollers — The ADF pickup rollers had accumulated paper dust and oil from years of feeding thousands of pages. Worn rollers lose their grip on paper, causing misfeeds and multi-page pulls.
Drive motor and gear assembly — The internal drive mechanism that powers the scanner carriage was accessible after removing the side panels. The gear train and motor were inspected for wear and debris.
The Repair
We replaced the worn timing belt, cleaned and resurfaced the ADF rollers, and cleaned the scanner glass and calibration strip. After reassembly, we ran test scans from both the ADF and the flatbed to verify clean, straight output with no banding or distortion.
The bizhub’s internal diagnostics confirmed the scanner was operating within spec, and the ADF fed a 50-page test stack without a single misfeed.
Why On-Site Copier Repair Matters
The bizhub 227 weighs over 60 pounds and sits at the center of most office workflows. Taking it out of service to ship for repair means your team can’t print, scan, or copy — sometimes for days. On-site repair keeps your downtime to hours, not days, and avoids the risk of damage during transport.
