The 40% Rule
Here’s the simplest rule of thumb: if the repair costs more than 40% of what a comparable new laptop costs, replace it.
For example, if a new laptop that meets your needs costs $600, any repair under $240 is worth doing. Above that, you’re better off putting the money toward a replacement.
This rule works for most situations, but there are exceptions — which we’ll cover below.
Repairs That Are Almost Always Worth It
These repairs are cost-effective on laptops up to 6-7 years old:
- SSD upgrade ($140-$210 with installation) — transforms performance
- RAM upgrade ($75-$135) — if your laptop has 4GB or less
- Battery replacement ($60-$150) — restores portable use
- Virus/malware removal ($65-$125) — software issue, not hardware
- OS reinstall ($65-$100) — fixes corrupted Windows
- Keyboard replacement ($80-$200) — common on laptops 3+ years old
All of these cost significantly less than a new laptop and extend the device’s life by 2-5 years.
Repairs That May Not Be Worth It
These repairs get expensive quickly:
- Screen replacement ($150-$350) — worth it on laptops under 4 years old, questionable on older ones
- Motherboard repair ($200-$500) — only worth it on premium laptops (MacBook Pro, ThinkPad)
- GPU failure ($300-$600) — often not repairable on laptops
- Water damage ($100-$400+) — unpredictable; depends on what components were affected
For these, compare the repair cost against the 40% rule.
Age-Based Decision Guide
0-3 years old: Repair almost anything. The laptop has significant life left.
3-5 years old: Repair software issues and affordable hardware fixes (SSD, RAM, battery, keyboard). Think twice about expensive repairs (screen, motherboard).
5-7 years old: Only repair if the fix is cheap ($100 or less) or if you need the laptop for basic tasks (email, web browsing). SSD upgrade is still worth it at this age.
7+ years old: Generally not worth repairing unless it’s a simple software fix. The laptop likely can’t run current software well and security updates may have ended.
What About MacBooks?
MacBooks hold their value longer than Windows laptops, so the repair math is different:
- MacBooks under 5 years old are almost always worth repairing
- Battery replacement ($129-$199) extends life significantly
- SSD upgrades aren’t possible on newer MacBooks (soldered storage), but older models benefit enormously
- Screen and keyboard repairs are worth it up to 6-7 years
MacBooks routinely last 7-10 years with proper maintenance.
